The history of the valley and the discovery of the Neanderthal fossils show the mutual relationship between local history and world affairs: human fossils from the Feldhofer Grotte became famous because Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution had just revolutionised the 19^th century world view.

The skeleton found in 1856, as well as bones of subsequent excavations at the discovery site are displayed.
