A valley and its secret

The history of the valley and the discovery of the Neanderthal fossils show the mutual relationship between local history and world affairs: human fossils from the Feldhofer Grotte became famous because Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution had just revolutionised the 19th century world view.

The skeleton found in 1856, as well as bones of subsequent excavations at the discovery site are displayed.
