Spätpleistozäne Besiedlung der Alpen

Am Südrand der Alpen ist das Neanderthal Museum bislang an einer Ausgrabung beteiligt. Seit 2010 werden in Zusammenarbeit mit den Universitäten Ferrara (Italien) und Tarragona (Spanien) sowie der Gemeinde Clauzetto Ausgrabungen in der Rio Secco Höhle durchgeführt. Die Fundstelle liegt in Friaul im Nordosten Italiens.

Dank einer Testgrabung aus dem Jahre 2002 war bekannt, dass sich in etwa 2 Meter Tiefe eine Fundschicht aus der Zeit des Neanderthalers befindet. Die Erkenntnisse um das Verhalten des Neanderthalers am Südrand der Alpen sind dünn. Überraschend kam eine weitere Fundschicht zu Tage. Diese liegt rund 50 cm oberhalb derjenigen aus der Zeit des Neanderthalers und birgt Funde des Gravettien.
