Academic theses and dissertations regularly form a part of the museum's research. They may be about the museum's work or may be written as part of one of the museum's research projects.

Birgit Neumann, Master's thesis (2006): Homo neanderthalensis: Bruder, Vetter, wilder Mann?

On the basis of articles and reporting from three German magazines (Der Spiegel, Bild der Wissenschaft, PM), the thesis examined changes in the popular perception of Neanderthals from 1945 to the present.

Priscilla Bayle, Dissertation (2008): Analyses quantitatives par imagerie à haute résolution des séquences de maturation dentaire et des proportions des tissus des dents déciduales chez les Néanderthaliens et les Hommes modernes.

The dissertation compares the childhood dental development of Neanderthals and modern humans in order to identify similarities and differences, and to clarify the development process in both groups.

Monire Aschrafi, Master's thesis (2009): Das lithische Inventar von Taoungat 1, Marokko.

The basis of the thesis was a technological analysis of the lithic artefacts from the titular Epipalaeolithic site in the east of Morocco. Results were compared on a regional level with those from other Epipalaeolithic sites.

Yvonne Tafelmaier, Master's thesis (2009): Das steinzeitliche Fundmaterial der Volkringhauser Höhle im Hönnetal.

As part of this thesis the Stone Age artefacts from Volkringhaus Cave were presented for the first time. The analysis of the artefacts and faunal remains from the cave, in combination with two new radiocarbon dates, placed the site, with a high degree of probability, in the late Middle Palaeolithic at ca. 42,000 years BP.

Jens Alvermann, Master's thesis (2010): Museum-Forschung-Medien. Mediale Vermittlung von Forschungsmethoden in archäologischen Museen am Beispiel einer Medienentwicklung für die Projektstudie. „Forschungscontainer" des Neanderthal Museums.

The thesis examined the media exposure and communication of research methodology within the exhibitions of museums in North Rhine Westphalia with the stated aim of linking theory and practice.
